TallyMaster was conceived by Carnegie Mellon University, who developed the basic principles with ANLA/HRI assistance and funding. RCS licensed the concept and commercialized the hardware and software to form a marketable product of significant benefit to nurseries. The concept allows nurseries to achieve good ROI and efficiency gains. TallyMaster simplifies the taking of field inventory. It is setup to take inventory of size related products, such as caliper, height, container size, etc. The system includes a caliper measuring unit that allows one to caliper trees in a row, stopping only for a second or two at each tree. The other inventory means are manual, but use a PDA to make it faster and more convenient. When you get back to the office, the inventory can be uploaded to a PC in seconds and is ready to use. No handwriting, no keypunching, no mistakes, and no delays. TallyMaster presently comes in two versions, one with an inventory management option and one without. Version 4 and above has the option that allows control and reporting of inventory. One can maintain a list of customers and vendors, enter purchase orders, select products from any site to dig, move inventory to or from a field, and produce a packing list. It does everything except pricing and invoicing, which can be done by other commonly used accounting programs.
